Girl Guides is a great organisation for girls who love making friends, having fun and developing new skills.
The Warragamba Girl Guides have vacancies for girls aged 7 to 15. They meet in the Guide hall on Monday or Wednesday evenings and enjoy activities and games which are fun but also teach leadership, teamwork, decision making, a respect for the environment, communication skills and a sense of community. Outdoor activities are an important part of the Australian Guide programme and the girls have had the opportunity to go camping, sailing, horse riding, rock climbing, flying, swimming, surfing, ice skating as well as campfire cooking and gadget making. The new Southern Cross Ranger unit for girls aged 15 – 18 years old has 4 girls working on their Queen’s Guide award and meets fortnightly.
The Guide hall has been renovated with an internal bathroom, new kitchen and storage areas. Many thanks to the parents who have helped but especially Steve Bloem who has been a wonderful help with the building works and Terry Fraser who has spent many hours painting the hall.
2010 is the ‘Year of The Guide’ celebrating 100 years of Guiding with some great events planned so this is a great time to get involved and help local girls grow into responsible young women.
We need a new female, over 18, leader for the girls. No experience is necessary as free training is provided. Please phone Margaret for further details: 4773 8974.

Luddenham was named after the Blaxland family property in Kent, England. John Blaxland, elder brother of the more famous Gregory, received a grant of 6710 acres between South Creek and the Nepean River on 30 November 1813. The Blaxlands were the first Australians to export wine. John did not live on the property but employed others to oversee and work this land. Among those employed were German and Swiss families brought out to Australia especially to work in the vineyards. Many descendants of these families still live in the area.
Luddenham is now split between the local government areas of Penrith and Liverpool. Moving the boundary to include the whole village into Penrith has been proposed on several occasions, most recently at the Progress Association AGM. The majority of residents are in favour of this as they go to Penrith for high schooling, shopping and work. It might also be easier to get the village connected to the sewer line. The Progress Association meets on the first Wednesday of the month in the Progress Hall. Contact 4773 4454.
Luddenham is well known for the Showground with the popular Luddenham Show held there every year. The Sydney Society of Model Engineers on Luddenham Road is open to the public on the last Sunday of the month and is a great place for a family visit to see the model trains, boats and planes. Vicary’s Winery has been making wine since 1923 and has a regular market there as well as the wool shed dances. The Hubertus German club moved to Luddenham when the Badgery Creek area was chosen as an airport site. There are three churches, the Uniting Church, St James’ Anglican Church and the Holy Family Catholic Church. There are also two schools, the public school, the Holy Family Catholic school and a child care centre.
There is a Rural Fire Brigade, 4773 4142, and a surprising number of shops and businessess in Luddenham, most of them featured here but also including Trevor Roots butcher, 4773 4102, and SNS Accounting, 4773 4235.
The new Shell service station is the newest development that has grown since Charlie and Maria Cambarari moved to Luddenham in 1971 and took over the small corner store. The shop has grown into a retail centre with a take away, beautician, work wear shop, doctor, pharmacist, newsagency and post office, supermarket and most recently the new Shell service station. Charlie and Maria wanted to provide a village shopping centre for the community and they both worked really hard to achieve this.

Premier Nathan Rees has welcomed families back to Warragamba Dam, officially reopening the grounds for the first time in more than a decade. Mr Rees declared Warragamba Dam back open to visitors after a $240 million upgrade.

At the recent opening Premier Nathan Rees said “Many of us have fond memories of family visits to Warragamba Dam and it’s great to reopen the gates to this iconic site today,”
“With the construction works that closed the dam in 1998 now finished, the dam can return to its rightful place as one of Western Sydney’s most popular tourist destinations.
“Before the closure, the dam attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors each year and we know families are keen to get back to their favourite picnic spot.”
Mr Rees also announced that a workers memorial will be constructed at the site to commemorate the men who were injured and lost their lives during the construction of Warragamba Dam.
“Next year marks the 50th anniversary of the dam and a memorial will be built to honour those who died or were injured building Warragamba Dam for future generations,” Mr Rees said.
“Planning for the memorial is underway and it will be unveiled next year as part of the dam’s anniversary.”
Mr Rees said a large number of visitors were expected to visit the site and a free shuttle bus service would operate on a loop and leave Penrith station every hour from 8.30am to 3.30pm.
“The dam will stay open now seven days a week and I’m sure many families will enjoy a picnic back here in the grounds during the coming summer months,” Mr Rees said.
Minister for Water Phil Costa said people returning to the dam will benefit from a range of new facilties.
“Families returning to the dam will be able to enjoy new picnic shelters and tables, landscaping and three new viewing platforms to provide excellent views of the dam and lake,” Mr Costa said.
“New signage throughout the site provides information about the dam, its history and our drinking water catchments. Heritage items have also been placed around the grounds.

The Bicentennial celebrations will be opened on Saturday November 7 at 11am in Mulgoa Park.
The historic houses bus tour to ‘Fernhill’, ‘Winbourne’ and ‘Fairlight’ (gardens only) and ‘Glenleigh’ (garden and interior) is only available for 9.30am departure now.
This year marks the Bicentenary of the grant of land at Mulgoa to Edward Cox on 1st November, 1809, confirmed by Governor Macquarie on 1st January, 1810.
The settlement of the Mulgoa Valley began with the building of ‘The Cottage’ in 1810. William Cox’s three sons George, Henry and Edward lived at ‘The Cottage’ before developing their own properties: ‘Winbourne’ (1824), ‘Glenmore’ (1825) and ‘Fernhill’ (1842). With St. Thomas’ Church (1836-1838), these buildings reflect the early pioneering phase of prosperity, evolution of architectural styles and the social and religious aspirations of the Cox family.
Celebrations will be opened on Saturday November 7 at 11am in Mulgoa Park by Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO, Governor of New South Wales.
